About this portrait
Otumfuo Baidoo Bonsoe II, also known as Badu Bonsu II, was the Ahanta king remembered for his resistance against Dutch colonial authority on the Gold Coast. He ruled during a difficult period in Ahanta history and became a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resistance.
In 1838, he was captured and executed by the Dutch after conflict with their colonial administration. His story remains one of the most emotional chapters in Ahanta history, especially because his head was taken to the Netherlands and only returned to Ghana in 2009 after more than a century.
This portrait honors his legacy, the dignity of Ahanta leadership, and the memory of a king whose name continues to inspire conversations about heritage, justice, and identity.
